Posted on 31 March 2008

KATHMANDU, March 31 - The top leaders of the three ruling parties participating in the upcoming Constituent Assembly (CA) elections Monday expressed their commitment to the Election Commission (EC) that they will conduct the twice-deferred polls at any costPrime Minister and Nepali Congress President Girija Prasad Koirala, CPN-UML General Secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal and CPN-Maoist Chairman Prachanda also suggested the EC to hold the polls on April 10, even if that means exercising the ‘ultimate right’.

PM Koirala also advised the EC to use the Army, police or even its rights to conduct the assembly polls.

During the meeting at the EC today, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Bhoj Raj Pokhrel warned, “Do not make us punish you for the violation of the election Code of Conduct (CoC), which you yourselves had drafted’.

The EC further directed the top three leaders to stop the violent activities immediately, to follow the CoC and to behave in a proper way.

The EC had written to PM Koirala, UML General Secretary Nepal and Maoist Chairman Prachanda yesterday inviting them to discuss solution to the violation of the CoC and its effective implementation to ensure a conducive environment for free, fair and impartial elections.

The meeting comes in light of the increasing violence between the activists of the three parties in different parts of the country at a time when the CA polls are just 10 days ahead.
